Without the resurrection of Jesus, death would appear permanent. No one would have come back from the dead to explain what happens after death. Jesus told his disciples what would happen. But they were slow to believe the Easter truth. God ensured that his people had witnesses to assure that Jesus did not remain dead.

He lives, and it makes a difference! I too shall live. Death has become a pathway into paradise. Jesus has already made me spiritually alive by giving me faith in his resurrection. In every possible way, Jesus takes me from death to life.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Women's Fiber Fellowship is a group of women and girls of Hope who joined hands this past year in community service and fellowship to knit, sew, crochet, and create cold weather gear from socks to blankets. They had three baskets of items to donate! Quilts and children/infant gear were distributed to the Artemis House here in Spearfish! The other items were distributed in downtown Rapid on the statues! What a blessing it is to have this wonderful group of ladies sharing their talents to bless our community! They continue to meet weekly on Saturday mornings.

It was a wonderful evening celebrating our Savior's birth through scripture and carols!

We held our annual Advent by Candlelight on Sunday, December 7th. Advent by Candlelight is a special evening for women to prepare their hearts to celebrate Christ's birth. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event lovely and meaningful. Here are some pictures of the wonderful evening!

Today we learned how God created light on the first day, sky on the second day, and the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day.  We also learned how God sent his Son, Jesus, to be our Savior.  When Jesus was born, God sent a special star to guide the wise men to his Son so they could worship him.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

The youngest kids made paintings of the sun.  The middle kids made beautiful stars, and the big kids created a mixed media solar system scene.  All of these  projects remind us that God is the creator of the universe.  “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”  Psalm 19:1

We enjoyed hula hoop “orbit” games, comet toss, and Star Star Moon (like Duck Duck Goose).  The youngest children also loved the water play station!

The younger and middle age groups enjoyed hands-on stations experimenting with light and playing with sun, moon, and star-shaped materials.  The oldest kids learned about gravity and calculated how far they could jump on the moon compared to here on Earth.

Today, we learned how God made the dry land and created plants, trees, and all kinds of vegetation according to their kinds on the third day.   We also learned about a man named Zacchaeus who climbed a tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus.  Little did he know that Jesus would show him amazing love and forgiveness, and even come to eat at his house that day!

Give thanks to the LORD for he is good, his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34

The youngest and middle kids made layered flowers.  The older kids made leaf pattern pictures.  These projects reminded them of the detail that God put into the flowers, plants, and trees that he designed on the third day of creation.  

Younger and middle kids enjoyed relay races with popcorn and cotton balls (all plant products).  The youngest children enjoyed some fun plant stations and water play!

All kids got to plant pea seeds.  These bags can be hung up in a window so they can watch how God designed the seeds to open up and grow with water and sunlight.  All ages also made vegetable prints.

Today, we learned how God made birds, fish, and land animals, all according to their kinds, on the fifth and sixth days of creation.  We also learned about a      miraculous catch of fish that Jesus gave to his disciples, showing them, once again, that he was the Son of God.

You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. Psalm 145:16

The youngest and middle kids made elephant paintings.  The oldest kids made foil fish.  These projects reminded them of the 5th and 6th days of creation.

Younger kids mimicked the movements of different animals.  Middle kids did animal musical chairs and charades.  The older kids enjoyed playing sharks and minnows as well as a frog relay race.  

All kids worked on their creation booklets to remind them of what God made on each day of creation.  All kids got to explore real animal pelts, skulls, and footprints, all showing the amazing detail that God put into the kinds of animals he designed.

Today, we learned how God made the crown of his creation, man and woman, on the sixth day of creation.  Each child learned that they are a special creation of God, too… someone for whom God would even send his Son to be their Savior.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14

All the kids created a mixed-media self portrait. This project reminded them that God created each of them to be unique with special talents and abilities, and that God watches over them and loves them.

Your child has been working on a beautiful Creation Book every day this week!  Please take some time to read it with your child, and you can use the empty pages at the end to keep photos of your child enjoying God’s creation!

Thank you for bringing your child to Creation VBS this week and trusting us to teach your children about our amazing God and Savior.  We pray that their time here was a blessing as they learned how God created the beautiful world that we live in.  It was a  blessing for us to be able to spend time with your children and to see God’s Word strengthen their hearts.  You and your family are always welcome here at Hope and we look forward to seeing you again!

As parents, you get to observe God’s creative power in your own children.  What a miracle it is to see how they can learn and grow.  Not only are they a wonderful creation, but God says that he makes each of us a new creation through faith in our Savior, Jesus.  Just as food and exercise help your child grow physically, God’s Word helps them grow spiritually.  May God bless you as you continue sharing Jesus with your children.

As we reflect on the beginning of 2024, this year started with something new for Hope. The launch of Hope's free app! The app allows for easy access to past sermon messages, upcoming events, helpful resources, and much more. February and March were highlighted by our Midweek Lenten services and suppers.  We gathered together over delicious, themed meals that brought warmth and fellowship to our week.

Our teens started to prepare for their WELS Youth Rally trip in Fort Collins, Co in June with a brunch fundraiser. They served a delicious brunch after worship, generously supported by the congregation. It was inspiring to see the energy and enthusiasm from our youth as they worked to fund their trip and grow in faith.

As March came to a close, we celebrated Holy week and one of the most special events of the year—our Easter service. We were reminded through the resurrection of Jesus, that he alone takes our sins away so that we may no longer be burdened by their weight. The children of Hope shared this message and their faith with the congregation with a special song during service. Following the worship, we enjoyed a wonderful Easter brunch, lovingly prepared by the men of Hope. The celebration continued with a festive egg hunt for the children. We were filled with joy seeing all our friends, family, members, and guests at this special celebration.

Spring may have started with a familiar chill here in South Dakota (no surprise there), but it didn’t take long for the weather to warm up. Soon enough, the snow would melt, and we would be walking over to our neighbors at Garden Hills to sing hymns of praise for them.

April and May were busy months as we prepared for one of the highlights of our summer—Vacation Bible School (VBS). This year, our theme was “Miracles of Jesus,” and we were incredibly blessed with so many amazing volunteers who helped make it all happen during our VBS work nights. We couldn't have done it without the generous support from our church family.

Another special moment that we look forward to each year is celebrating Ascension Day. This service is always a joy, with the Hope Men’s Choir singing a beautiful hymn. After worship, we gathered for our annual Ascension Day pie and ice cream social. So many delicious pies were shared, and it was a perfect way to spend time together.

Then, June brought the excitement of VBS week! We were blessed with a fantastic group of volunteers and a wonderful group of campers. It was an incredible week of fun, song, and, most importantly, sharing the good news of Jesus with each child who walked through our doors. We had a great time teaching them about the miracles of Jesus and seeing their faces light up with the love of Christ. Four women from Hope attended the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society convention in Sioux Falls! LWMS is a nationwide organization of WELS women who support mission work in the US and all around the world with their prayers, encouragement, and offerings. 

A June highlight that our teens still talk about was their trip to Fort Collins, Colorado, for the WELS Youth Rally, From the Mountaintops in June! This was truly an experience of a lifetime for our teens and their chaperones. They had the opportunity to participate in small group sessions covering a range of meaningful topics. They got creative with their care projects. Most importantly they grew together in faith with 2,800 other young believers from all over the country.  At the end of their trip, they enjoyed a thrilling white water rafting trip! What an amazing experience for our Hope Teens!

As we look back on the summer months at Hope, we’re filled with gratitude for the many exciting events and opportunities that brought our community together and to grow in faith.

Our Family Bible Studies were well attended this summer, providing a space for families to come together, dive into Scripture, and grow in faith. It was a blessing to see so many of you join us in these studies.

In August, we had the honor of hosting the talented Chris Driesbach, who brought his incredible music and story to Hope. His performance was not only inspiring but also a beautiful reminder of the works God can do in our lives and His redeeming love. August is the hottest month here in the Black Hills and one way we beat the heat this summer was hosting Hope's very first Summer Splash party! We invited our neighbors from the Green Acres and Mountain Shadows and surrounding community to join us for a fun-filled afternoon of sprinklers, water play, and popsicles. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with those around us, share in laughter, and enjoy the warmth of summer.  

Pastor Schutz traveled to Missoula for the ordination and installation of new missionary Joshua Schroeder. Pastor Schroeder serves the core group in Kalispell, Montana, as they plant a new church. Please pray for Pastor Schroeder, his family, the small group of believers he serves, and the mission of their brand-new congregation.

As the summer heat gave way to cooler September temperatures, our Sunday school teachers were busy preparing for the new year. Their dedication to creating a welcoming and engaging environment for the children to grow in their faith at Hope was a true blessing.  We’re grateful for the teachers who have given their time and talents to share the word of God with our youngest members.

As we close the chapter on another year, we are grateful for the many events and moments that brought us closer to one another and to God.

October was a particularly busy month at Hope, starting with our first Adult Game Night. This has quickly become a beloved monthly tradition where adults come together to enjoy games, snacks, and fellowship. Held on the first Sunday of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., our game nights are a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other better and have fun in a relaxed setting. We look forward to many more game nights in 2025.

We also enjoyed our annual hayride and pumpkin carving at Pavel’s Farm. As we rode through the fields with beautiful views of Bear Butte we were reminded of the beauty of God's creation and the blessings of church family. It was a time for fellowship, laughter, and fun for everyone. The children got to pick pumpkins from the Pavel's pumpkin patch to carve and we enjoyed warm drinks and cookies. It was a memorable day for all of us.

Our 3rd Annual Harvest Fest was another big fall highlight. We invited our neighbors and community for a trunk-or-treat, games, a chili feed, a raffle, a photo booth, an apple press, and a hot chocolate bar. The event was a huge success, thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the beautiful weather we had. We are so thankful for everyone who helped make this event possible and for all the families who came out to enjoy this time with us.

We wrapped up October by celebrating Reformation Sunday with our sister congregations in the area. The children sang a beautiful Reformation song, and after the service, we enjoyed a fellowship meal of German fare, including beer brats, German potato salad, mac 'n cheese, and desserts. It was a time of shared worship and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

As November arrived, we turned our hearts toward Thanksgiving. Our annual Thanksgiving meal was a time for our Hope family to gather around the table and give thanks for the fellowship and faith that we share. We shared delicious dishes—turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, and desserts.

This time of gratitude also marked a time of preparation for the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Our Sunday School children and teachers worked hard to prepare for the Christmas program, which featured a beautiful medley of songs, readings from the book of Luke, and even a bell song. The children’s involvement in this program reminded us all of the true meaning of Christmas and the joy of sharing the story of Jesus’ birth.

The season of Advent was a time for slowing down and reflection even when life felt like it was getting faster and busier with all the Christmas preparations. The Ladies of Hope hosted their annual Advent by Candlelight service, inviting women from surrounding congregations, family, and friends to slow down and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. Through carols, readings, and a meal, we focused on the significance of this holy season and took a moment to step away from the busyness of life to truly reflect on the birth of Jesus.

The year came to a close with our Candlelight Christmas Eve service, a beautiful and peaceful evening of carols and scripture readings. The flickering candlelight and familiar songs reminded us that no matter the struggles or hardships we may face in life, Jesus came to this earth for one thing: us. His humble birth, His perfect life, His sacrificial death, and His glorious resurrection were all for our salvation. The greatest gift of all is God Himself.

As we step into the new year, we carry with us the special memories of the past year. We are grateful for the times we’ve spent together, the friendships we’ve built, and the ways we’ve seen God work in our lives.  We give thanks to our brothers and sisters in Christ who walk alongside us in our joys and in our struggles. We look forward to the new opportunities for fellowship, service, and growth that lie ahead.

Thank you to everyone who made this year at Hope so special—your dedication, service, and love have made a difference. We pray that God continues to bless our congregation and our community in the year to come. May we continue to grow in faith and love as we serve Him together.

We were blessed with a beautiful fall day for Hope's third annual Harvest Fest and trunk or treat for the Green Acres and Mountain Shadows neighborhoods and surrounding community.  Hope members decorated their trunks for trunk or treat and passed out candy. The children enjoyed weaving their way through a maze. Games on the lawn included sack races, fall croquet, Noah's Ark bean bag toss, a scavenger hunt, and pumpkin lollipop pull.  A hot chocolate bar and fresh squeezed apple juice from an 1800's apple press was enjoyed by all! As people went inside for the chili feed and raffle, they could stop and get their picture taken at our fall themed photo booth. The weather was perfect, and we loved meeting our neighbors! We are looking forward to next year!

We learned how Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding in Cana. This was his first miracle, and it was one of many ways he showed that he is truly God. We have an amazing Savior. Being human like us, he understands our struggles and hardships. He is concerned about what we face every day, even the little things. Being truly God, he is powerful to care for us every day.

The younger kids made water/wine jar paintings. The older kids made stained glass jars, which they will bring home tomorrow.  Both of these projects helped remind them of Jesus’ first miracle, turning water into wine!

Water play, jar-filling relays, and wedding dances reminded the children that Jesus’ first miracle took place at a wedding celebration.

The younger children made designs on clay jars. The older children made clay coil jars. The children also played with blue and red water beads that remind us of the water and the wine in our Bible story.

We learned how Jesus fed over 5000 people with just two fish and five barley loaves. Even more important than food for our stomach is food for our soul. Jesus taught his disciples that he is the “bread of life.” Food sustains us for a little while, but Jesus is the one who washes away our sin and gives us eternal life.      

The younger children made mixed media pictures of loaves and fish. The older children painted loaves and fish with acrylics on canvas.  They will need to dry overnight and will bring them home tomorrow.

The children ran through an obstacle course and found bread and fish at the end. The children also enjoyed various activities including magnetic fishing, “Bread, Bread, Fish” (like Duck, Duck, Goose), and relay races.

Our science activity today was baking bread from scratch! Your child will bring home their own loaf of bread to bake at home. See instructions with your child’s loaf on how to bake. Enjoy, and remember that Jesus is the bread of life!

We learned how Jesus healed a man who was paralyzed and couldn’t walk. Jesus told the man that his sins were forgiven. Some who didn’t believe that Jesus was the Son of God grumbled and complained. Jesus showed them he was God and had the authority to forgive sins by telling the man to take up his mat and walk. Jesus healed him… body and soul. You can show your child that our help comes from the Lord by acknowledging his help in your life. As the maker of all things, he gives us the ability to think, live, move, and work.

The children made picture frames decorated with rope to remind them of the ropes the man’s friends used to lower him down through the roof to Jesus.

We are thankful for the amazing bodies God has given us!  The youngest children did some fun exercises and enjoyed relaxing water play. The rest of the children enjoyed a relay race carrying stuffed animals on a blanket stretcher, and a hop-on-one-foot relay as well.

Our hands-on activity today was learning about first aid and practicing some basic bandage techniques.

We learned about Jesus raising his friend Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus had been dead in a tomb for four days. Jesus simply spoke and raised him to life, so he could get up and walk out on his own. Many who saw this miracle finally believed that Jesus was the Son of God. Not long after this, Jesus would lay down his life by dying on the cross. He, too would be put in a tomb, but a few days later, he would leave that tomb to prove to us all that he has power over life and death. Trusting in him, we look forward to Jesus raising us up on the last day, too.

The children enjoyed some favorite games and activities from the week. They had fun with additional water play, too.

The life cycle of a butterfly is a common reminder of Jesus’ resurrection and his promise of our resurrection. The caterpillar hides in its cocoon, but then rises as something even more beautiful. All children worked on a butterfly life cycle project, remembering Jesus’ resurrection and his promise to raise us, too.

The life of Jesus, recorded in the Bible, is read again and again. In fact, it has been called the greatest story ever told. And it’s more than just a story—it’s fact! It really happened, with all of its real-life twists and turns. At this Christmastime, we want to look at a specific part of Jesus’ life—his birth. Let’s take a closer look at the elements of this beloved account: its setting, plot, characters, conflict, and theme. And as we do, may we be moved to say by faith, “What a story!”

We learned about how God saved Noah and his family and kept his promise to bring us a Savior. Noah trusted the Lord and listened to his Word even when the world around him didn’t.  So, he did as God commanded and built an ark to save his family and all the different kinds of animals God sent to him. God placed a rainbow in the sky as a reminder of his promises to us.

The younger and middle kids made mixed-media pictures of the ark, and the older kids made rainbow window stars to remind them of the sign of the rainbow God gave as he promised never to destroy the whole world with a world-wide flood again.

The younger kids experimented with mixing colors to remind them of the rainbow God made. The older kids measured out the dimensions of the ark outside to see just how large it was.

We learned about a prophet named Jonah. When God sent him to tell the Ninevites to turn from their sin to God’s mercy instead, he didn’t want to go.  He fled in the opposite direction. But God loved the people of Nineveh, and he loved Jonah, so he turned Jonah around in an extraordinary way. The people of Nineveh finally heard God’s Word and believed.

The younger kids painted big fish with a surprise inside—take a peek under the fin! The middle kids made a pastel “Jonah in the fish” picture. The older kids designed and painted Japanese fish kites. These projects reminded the kids of the giant fish God used to save Jonah.

The younger kids enjoyed ocean animal movements. The older kids played “Sharks and Minnows” and whale milk jug toss.

All the kids watched short video clips about sharks and whales. The kids then enjoyed building “Nineveh” with wooden blocks, giant blocks, and plastic cups. The older kids created graph paper scale drawings of a human and different kinds of whales and fish.

We learned how Jesus gave his disciples a miraculous catch of fish. This was one of many instances that proved to his disciples that he was truly God. It also got their attention for an important mission he was calling them to—being fishers of men.  God has called us to be fishers of men, too. You can join in on this amazing work with your child as you learn and share God’s Word together.

The younger kids made fish mobiles and the older kids made foil fish to remind them of the miraculous catch of fish and Jesus’ call for them to be fishers of men, too!

Everyone got a little wet with various water games and fish tag.  The younger students caught sponge fish with little nets.

We had some fun stations for the little ones, including magnetic fishing poles and sensory bins. The older kids used fishing poles from the Outdoor Campus West to practice casting, as well as making prints with rubber fish.

We learned about Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples were terrified, but Jesus reassured them of his power and love for them.  We were reminded that Jesus loves us, too. As true God, he is more powerful than all that might threaten us in this life. We can call on him to help us at anytime and be confident of his love and help.

The kids enjoyed some favorite games and activities from the week. They also made prayer sticks. Please help your child write the names of friends and family members on the sticks, and use them to pray together for your family’s loved ones. Jesus hears and answers our prayers.

I Am Excited to Receive the Lord’s Supper
I am looking forward to receiving the Lord’s Supper because of the blessings that follow. The three main blessings that come from the Lord’s Supper are the forgiveness of sins, the strengthening of faith in Jesus, and encouraging our fellow Christian friends.

One of the many important blessings of the Lord’s supper is the forgiveness of sins. We know this as Matthew states in chapter 26, verse 28, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” God’s forgiveness of our sins guarantees we will spend eternal life with him. Romans 6:22,23 states, “Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” By giving us his body and blood, Jesus reconciles us to God. Colossians 1:21,22 states, “Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.”

Another important blessing that comes with the Lord’s supper is that the Holy Spirit uses it to strengthen our faith in Jesus and the sacrifice he made for us on the cross. Not only does he remind us of Jesus’ sacrifice, but h gives us the very things that paid for our sins: Jesus’ body and blood. He gives them to us in a personal way when he says they are “for you”. Luke 22: 19-20 tells us “He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you, do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you.’ Yet another blessing of the Lord’s Supper includes the coming together of fellow Christians to celebrate our unity of faith in God’s word. When the Lord’s Supper is received with Christians who confess the same faith in what Jesus says, we are uplifting and encouraging one another in our faith. Hebrews 10:23-25 says, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another- and all the more as you see the day approaching. “ This shows that as Christians, we must have each other’s backs and be there for each other no matter what.

The Lord’s supper is a blessing for me personally because it reassures me that I am saved by giving me the very things that paid for my sin, Jesus’ body and blood. It assures me that I will get to spend eternal life with the Lord. It strengthens my relationship with Christ and allows me to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s great to come together and receive these gifts from the Lord: the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.

In conclusion, the many blessings that come with the Lord’s Supper make me most excited to receive it. He gives me his body and blood for the forgiveness of all of my sins. He strengthens my faith in what he did for me. He encourages me with my brothers and sisters in Christ and lets me encourage them. These are the reasons I am most excited to receive the Lord’s supper.

Why is the Bible important to me?
In this document I am going to tell you the three reasons why the Bible is important to me and what it means to me and Bible verses to back up each reason of why the Bible is important to me. Plus, I am going to tell you about what each reason means to me personally and what it means about and why it is important and connected to my confession.

The Bible is important to me because it always assures me and constantly reminds me that no matter what, God loves me. For example, Romans 5:8 says, “But God shows his love for us because while we were still sinners Christ died for us”. “Though we be sinners, Christ sacrificed his life and suffered on the cross for us. This is important to me because if I ever feel like I am unloved I know that God still loves me. Knowing that he will love me no matter what makes me feel pretty good.

The Bible is important to me because it tells me of God’s promise to raise me up from the dead and spend eternity with him. For example, Matthew 28:6-7 says “He is not here He has risen come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.” This is important to me because it reminds me this, I know it is true because God defeated death by rising again and by trusting in him, I will be raised too.it is important to me to know that I will spend eternity with him, and it pushes me to keep going.  

The most important reason that the Bible is important to me is that it tells me of Gods sacrifice for us. I mean he died on the cross for us so we could go to Heaven to spend eternity with him. He was beaten and whipped all over his body after he was choked with chains and beat multiple times thrown off stuff and caught by the chains and then he was spit and jeered at and had salt and wine dumped on his cuts and then was forced to carry his cross and then was nailed to the cross and had the crown of thorns stabbing into his head and was STILL made fun of by the crucified men next to him. And then to top the cake was speared in the side but water came out and splashed the man with the spear. But he did this and suffered, and endured all of this for us and died and rose again so that we can go to heaven and spend eternal life with him!

The Faith I Confess

The Apostles’ Creed. We say it almost every Sunday, but when was the last time we slowed down to think through its deep meaning for our lives? Studying the Catechism is helpful for understanding what we confess in the Apostles’ Creed. The Apostles’ Creed wasn’t just made up, it was written by early Christians so that they could confess their faith together.

In the first article of the Apostles’ Creed, we confess that God our Father is the powerful creator of the universe. I am constantly in awe of the remarkable beauty of where I get to live. Whether I am in the canyon, the hills, the creek, the forest, or even just in town, I love seeing God’s handiwork in all of His created order. Psalm 33:6, 9 says, “By the word of the Lord, the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” Not only is he the father of our world and universe, but also the people who live in it. He gives each and every one of us unique talents and abilities to use to his glory.

In the second article of the Apostles’ Creed we confess that God sent his Son to die and pay for our sins. God’s Word convicts me of my sin not to beat me down and discourage me, but to reveal how much I need a Savior. I am quick to anger and less than abounding in love. I struggle daily with myself to make time for God in my life. I could never earn my way to heaven. Sin is always a part of my thoughts, words, and actions. Romans 7:18, 19, and 21 sum it up: “I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing. So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.” Good thing I have an almighty God who sent his Son to die for me, to pay the immeasurable price that I could not. Ephesians 1:7, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”

In the third article of the Apostles’ Creed, we confess that the Holy Spirit created faith in our hearts through his Word. For me, the Holy Spirit worked first through my baptism, creating the miracle of faith in my heart. Then, he used my family and brothers and sisters in Christ to share his Word with me bringing me up in my faith that I am so blessed to share with them. 2 Timothy 3:15 says this, “From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” I am extremely grateful for my faith, because without it, I have seen how hard life can be. Whether it is running a race, performing in a concert, talking about my faith, or even facing death, I do not need to be afraid. I have seen people tear themselves apart, worrying about what will come next, and if they will be okay. The Holy Spirit has planted faith in my heart, and I know that God is with me, and that he has forgiven me and will someday take me to heaven. And that is the most comforting and important thing I know. In the meantime, he allows me to live in thanksgiving for all he has done for me.

The Apostles’ Creed is a great way to remember how God is in every aspect of our lives. It connects us to Christians throughout history as well as to fellow Christians whenever we speak it together. The Apostles’ Creed allows me to share the reason for the hope I have in Jesus. As I am being confirmed, this is the faith that I confess.

Why the Bible is important to me.

The Bible is important to me because it gives me an opportunity to individually and privately talk with and hear from Jesus. It shows me my sin and forgiveness. In general, it basically shows, teaches, and helps me with everything. Everything I learn I take with me and try to apply it to my everyday life. Plus it takes on a much deeper meaning with me than it does for most people. One thing I appreciated learning is how God teaches me to take everyone else’s words and actions in the kindest possible way. Instead of taking it negatively, I can give them sympathy and forgiveness to loosen up the negative feelings of both when we are given the opportunity.

Why the two main teachings of the Bible, Law and Gospel, are important to me.

The Law and the Gospel, the two main teachings of the Bible, are both essential in our understanding of our need for a savior. By showing our sin, the Law directs us to find mercy and salvation in the Gospel, the news about Jesus. Without the Law and Gospel, we would be unaware of our Savior’s importance.

The Law acts as a curb, mirror, and guide for Christians. As a curb, it threatens punishment for breaking the commandments. As a guide it directs Christians to live according to God’s word. But most importantly, it shows our sins and desperate need for a savior. Frequently, people try to forge their own paths to heaven, relying on themselves and their good acts. But regardless of how hard we try, we will always fall short of God’s expectations. “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin” (Romans 3:20). This passage helps us better understand the Law’s purpose as a mirror. Seeing our sins and imperfections urges us to look to our Savior in the Gospel.

The Gospel is the good news about Christ. After studying the Law and realizing our sins, it is devastating to know that we are condemned to eternal death with no way to redeem ourselves. The book of Ephesians states, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). The apostle Paul compares our sinful nature to being dead; helpless, and unable to change our fate. However, in the same chapter, Paul writes, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5). Through Christ, all our sins are erased. We are saved through God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice. After hearing this message, Christians are compelled to do good works out of joy and gratitude, instead of fear and desperation.

While the Law shows me my sins, the Gospel shows me my Savior. The Gospel shares the good news about Christ, and without the Law, I would not be able to wholly comprehend Jesus’s significance. It is through the Gospel that I know that I am saved. Instead of living in terror, I can honor my God knowing he is loving and forgiving. Because of this knowledge, I am moved to do good works in order to thank God for his mercy. The Law allows me to fully appreciate my Savior and what he did for me.

Why Baptism Is Important to Me

Baptism is very special for many people. This “washing with water” is important to me because it is powerful to create and strengthen saving faith.

This washing with water is important because it give us a new life through Jesus. Baptism, as Jesus taught, is a washing with water connected to God’s powerful Word. First, this means that it is powerful to save me, which is a reason that I should not be afraid of eternal condemnation: 1 Peter 3:21, Baptism… now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is a great comfort to me even though I am a sinner, my baptism connects me to Jesus. I am covered in his perfect life. That is how I can stand before God with a clear conscience. God now sees me as his own. He sees me as he sees Jesus, as if I never had any sin at all.

Not only does baptism save me, but it also strengthens my faith. Paul says in Romans 6:4, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Because of my baptism, I get to live a new life each day. This means I can fight against temptation, and even when I give in to temptation, I have assurance of God's grace and certain forgiveness.

Baptism strengthens my faith by showing me that Jesus washed our sins away, and God has accepted me as his child. Its power to strengthen and create faith, is through the fact that the Holy Spirit enters me through baptism, just as Jesus of his Baptism had the Holy Spirit enter him.

Through Baptism God gives me the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit creates faith in my heart to believe all that Jesus has done for me. Through my baptism, the Holy Spirit leads me to call upon God in prayer, confident that he hears and answers in the way that is best for me.

Baptism does and will always hold a special place in my heart. These are some of the reasons why baptism is important to me.  

Why the Bible Is Important to Me.

The Bible is important to me because it teaches us all about our Lord, through the law and the gospel.

God’s desire is for all people to be saved from sin, death, and eternal damnation. He gives us the Bible as a tool to learn about sin and our need for a savior and for the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts. Scripture tells us in 2 Timothy 3:15 “From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” John 20:31 also notes that “these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

In the beginning of the Bible it teaches us all about God’s law, and what he wants us to follow and obey. But in the law, it also teaches us that we are sinful, and have always been sinful. Psalm 51:5 states “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me”. This means that we have a sinful nature and it is impossible to be without sin. God’s law is summarized in the ten commandments. The first, second, and third commandments show us how to love and respect God. The fourth through tenth show us how to respect and show love to our neighbor.

Through the law, the Bible tells us that we are sinners and deserve eternal punishment, but the Gospel shows us our Messiah, who is Jesus Christ our Savior. Unfortunately, we cannot live a perfect life and deserve eternal punishment, but God sent us the greatest gift that you could imagine, Jesus Christ, he was born of the virgin Marry and lived a perfect life, which no one else could do. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins. Believing in him, God gives us credit for Jesus’ perfect life. Romans 6:23 states “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. God calls us to repent of our sins. This means acknowledging that they separate us from God and merit condemnation before him. It also means believing the complete forgiveness Jesus won on the cross is for me personally.

The Bible teaches all about the Lord Jesus and his whole life story. It tells us about countless miracles, like when he healed the blind man, or when he calmed the storm on the sea of Galilee. One time Jesus even turned water into wine at a wedding. He even raised people from dead, but my favorite miracle of all is that he himself defeated the devil and rose from the dead.

The teaching of the Bible is a blessing to me personally because it helps me to get to know Jesus and allows the Holy Spirit to strengthen my faith. The Bible is also used for more than reading. For example, 2nd Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture as God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”. For me personally, the Bible reveals Jesus to me and all that he has done to save me. Because it is the Word of God without errors, I can be confident that what it says is absolutely true.

To conclude these are all the great reasons why the Bible is important to me. The most important thing the Bible does is reveal God's Savior for me. The Bible is meant for you, too. Take time to read it and see what God has done for you, too.

Why the “Offices of Christ” Are Important to Me

The most important offices of Christ are Prophet, Priest, and King. Jesus is our Prophet because he taught us about God and guides us. He is our Priest because he laid down his life for us. As our King he reigns over all things.

As our prophet, Jesus taught us about God and heaven. He taught many young children and adults about God and how they will be saved. He even taught us about how he was Jesus and would sacrifice himself one day for us. He is still a prophet today through us because now we tell others about Jesus. That is how he was prophet.

As our high priest, Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. His death and resurrection are seen as the ultimate expression for his love for us because they paid for our sin. He still forgives us today. This is how Jesus serves as our priest.

Last but not least as king, Jesus defeated sin and death and Satan for us. Today he continues to rule over all things for our eternal good. Because he is almighty, he knows our sin, but he also forgives us. This is how Jesus serves as our king.

These are the offices of Christ: prophet, priest, and king. They are important to me because, as my prophet he guides me with God’s Word, as my priest he sacrificed himself for me and forgives me, and as my king he is in control of all things for me. These are the reasons why the offices of Christ are important to me.

Hope held its first annual Harvest Fest and Trunk or Treat for the Green Acres and Mountain Shadows neighborhoods and surrounding community.  Hope members decorated their trunks for Trunk or Treat and passed out candy. Chili and hot chocolate bar were provided to warm up those who stopped by to enjoy this fee event. There were games out on the lawn and a picture booth! Check out some of the highlights of the event!

We learned about a young boy named Samuel and how God called him to be his prophet in Israel. Samuel learned to listen to the Lord.

We listen to God through his Word, the Bible. There he speaks to every situation in our life. We learn why we have troubles in this life, and we learn about our Savior, Jesus. Listening to God’s Word, your kids are heroes of faith, too.

"Speak, Lord, your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3:10).

The kids ran an obstacle course, pretending to be Samuel running to Eli in the middle of the night. The older kids  also had a team bed-making race!

The kids participated in fun listening activities that experimented with different sounds and decibels.

We learned about a young boy named David. He was a hero of faith who trusted that the Lord would give him victory over a Philistine warrior named Goliath. He inspired others to trust the Lord’s promises, too.

We can trust the Lord to keep the promises he has made to us in his Word. Your children are heroes of faith as they find their strength and help in the Lord.

"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped."
(Psalm 28:7).

The younger kids created a scene of a stream to show where David found his stones. The older kids made a game out of rocks, which also reminded them of the stones David used against Goliath.

Accuracy challenges reminded the children of how David defeated Goliath by trusting the Lord, not by using his own strength or skill.

We learned about a young servant girl who shared her faith with the family she served. Even though she had been taken away from her family and brought to another country, she shared the good news of her God with people she could have considered her enemy.

We can share the promises that God has made to us, too. Your children are heroes of faith who can share the good news of their Savior with all people.

"For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard" (Acts 4:20).

The kids made candle holders to remind us to let our light shine like the servant girl did. The younger kids also made speech-bubble suncatchers.

The kids played water games that reminded them of when Naaman dipped himself in the Jordan River.

The kids learned about sediments by making sediment bottles. These remind them of the servant girl’s master, Naaman, who listened to the prophet Elisha and was cleansed of his leprosy in the Jordan River.

We learned about a boy named Josiah who became the king of Israel when he was very young. By that time, the people had forgotten about God’s Word.  While his workers were making repairs to the temple, they found the scrolls of God’s Word. Josiah had them read the scrolls to the people and led the people in following the Lord once again.

Just as King Josiah led his people back to God's Word, we can lead others to God’s Word, too. Your children are heroes of faith as they share God’s powerful Word with their friends and family.

"Faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the Word of Christ." (Romans 10:17).

The kids made scrolls with a Bible verse on them, which reminded them of how King Josiah found the Word and shared it with the people.

The younger kids pretended to build up and fix the temple with blocks. The older kids played a Bible treasure hunt.

The Bible was hidden in the temple because the people had forgotten about it. The older children made hidden messages with lemon juice on paper. Ironing them revealed their hidden messages. The younger children used white crayon on white paper and painted over it to reveal their hidden messages.

We learned about a young man named Joseph. He was the favorite son of his father, but his jealous brothers sold him into slavery. Despite such terrible treatment, Joseph knew that he could still trust the Lord.

Our children can face all sorts of difficult situations at home and in school. God wants us to know that even when terrible things are happening to us, he is still there for us. He encourages us to call out to him in time of need and trust his love and care for us.
 
One of the best ways we can teach our children this is to model it for them. They will see you going through difficult times. They can probably sense when you are troubled even when you are trying to hide it. Those are great teachable moments. Let them see you asking God for help and trusting that he will care for you… even if it’s not always the way you think it should work out.

We saw how God turned Joseph’s troubles into a huge blessing for him and the people of Egypt. When lies were told about Joseph, he ended up in prison. Even there, he trusted the Lord and gave glory to God in the way he treated others.

When we have been wronged or hurt by someone else, it can be very difficult for us to feel like forgiving them. Sometimes, we even get angry with God and we take out our anger on others. Joseph didn’t do that.  He continued to trust that God hadn’t forgotten about him and that God had plans for him that he didn’t necessarily understand at the moment.  
 
One of the greatest gifts we can give to our children is the truth that God’s love for us in Jesus is steadfast. It doesn’t falter. Even when unjust things happen to us, our God, who loves us, will work those things for our eternal good.

The kids first watched a short video about the flooding of the Nile River. They then went out under the canopy and planted barley in bowls to take home!

We learned how the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help during a time of great oppression. The Lord raised up a helper for them in Moses. God had plans for Moses from little on.

God had plans for your little ones before they were born. With so many professionals out there for every kind of need, sometimes we forget that we can call on him.  Help your child remember where our help truly comes from, “the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” If our gracious God created the entire universe simply by speaking, he is certainly powerful enough to help us in every need and to use us to help others, too.
 
One of the greatest ways you can strengthen your children is by giving them a strong foundation in God’s Word.  Share with them the truth of how God has helped them so much already. Not only does he take care of their daily needs through parents like you, but he has also given them Jesus to be their Savior from sin.

The youngest and middle kids made Baby Moses pictures, and the older kids made burning bushes out of paper bags. These projects reminded us of how God protected Moses and guided him to help the Israelites.

We enjoyed the relay race “Baby Moses in a Basket” and other games like “Alligators in the Nile River.” The youngest kids also had fun with water play.

The kids first watched a short video clip from Prince of Egypt and then went out under the canopy. The youngest and middle kids played “Sink and Float” with various objects. The older kids made foil baskets and then raced them on the “Nile River” by blowing through straws.

We saw how the Lord watched over the Israelites and used Moses to bring his people out of slavery.

The events discussed during the week provide a mighty display of God’s power. But God’s strength is seen in more than just God delivering people from slavery. He delivered us from slavery to sin, death, and hell. Even greater than parting the waters of the sea for the Israelites, God has removed the barrier that existed between sinners and a holy God. In Jesus, we see that the Lord is our salvation in the greatest possible way, in a way that changes our whole eternity. That truth gives us strength to bear all sorts of trials in this life. That truth becomes a song of joy in our hearts that can be seen and heard in all we think, say, and do.

All the kids made pictures of crossing the Red Sea by using paints (youngest kids) and Mod-Podge and tissue paper (middle and older kids). These projects reminded us of how God led the Israelites out of Egypt and saved them from the Egyptian army.

We enjoyed relay races like “Ready to Travel” and “Chariot Race,” and we also played “Moses Says” (like Simon Says). The youngest kids also had fun with building blocks.

The kids sampled some Passover-like foods. They then made “unleavened bread” out of Play-Dough and created waves of the Red Sea with shaving cream before splitting them and making a path down the middle.

The week's events ended with a program where the children sang songs and told parents and guests about all they had learned!

Heavenly Father, at this anniversary we reflect on the gracious gifts that you have poured out on this congregation.  We look forward to the blessings you have in store for us in the years to come.  
We praise you for giving us the sure and certain hope of salvation through your Son, Jesus Christ.  You have preserved us with the preaching of your Word and the comfort of your sacraments.  You have used us to bring the good news of forgiveness in Christ to others in our community.
Lord, give us courage and hope as we move forward.  Be with the families of Hope.  Keep us safe from harm.  Do not allow any of your children to be plucked out of your hand.  Strengthen us in the confidence that you have already overcome our greatest enemies: sin, death, and the devil. Increase our trust in your promise that you are with us always.  Cause your Holy Spirit to work in us and through us, so that we may grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Be with us as we strive to pass down to our children the truths that have been passed down to us.  Continue to make our congregation a beacon of the hope that only you can give in this sin-darkened world.  
Grant that this celebration of your gracious work among us in the past fifty years be only the prelude to that far greater celebration we will enjoy forever in the joy and glory of the world to come.   Still be our guard while troubles last and bring us at last to our eternal home. Amen.

These stained glass windows were a few of the original windows in the old building on Jackson & Yale. Over time, they became brittle and broken. To prevent further deterioration, the windows were removed and stored for many years, in members' basements and even Pastor's office. Finally, church members Cara and Tanner Muckridge took it upon themselves to restore the windows to their former glory. They repaired the damages and even set the windows in new frames with back-lighting! We are so thankful that the windows have been preserved so our congregation will be able to enjoy them once again!

In the late 1960s, a small group of WELS members were living in the Spearfish area. These members desired to begin worshiping together in Spearfish. Because they were not yet able to support a full-time pastor, they asked if the pastor from Trinity in Sturgis would lead them in worship. The Spearfish members would contribute to supporting the pastor.


In March 1969, members organized and drew up a constitution. They elected council members: Stan Kruse of Belle Fourche, Ervin Preszler of Bison, Leroy Mayer of Isabel, and ushers Dennis Gentele and William Gentele.

On June 13, 1971, Pastor Donald Dengler was installed. By this time, efforts were underway to purchase land. One location was acquired but was later sold and the site at the corner of Jackson Blvd. and Yale St. was then purchased. Membership during this time grew to around 42 members.  

On September 9, 1973, a groundbreaking service was held. To fund the project, money was borrowed from the Wisconsin Synod’s Church Extension Fund. The Synod’s architectural office designed the building. While the design seemed unconventional, it had a functional interior. The first worship service in the new church was held on Easter Sunday, April 14, 1974, even though construction on the building was not yet finished. Dedication Day came nearly a month later, on May 12, 1974. By then, inflated costs of the construction had doubled the original estimate of $30,000. Knowing they needed a building to continue, the congregation cheerfully assumed the costs. Within six months, 14 new members had been added and, for the first time, the congregation was able to hold a Sunday school and a confirmation class.

The first worship service in the new building at W. Jackson and Yale was held on Easter Sunday, April 14, 1974, even though construction on the building was not yet finished.
Dedication Day came nearly a month later, on May 12, 1974.

On December 1, 1974, Pastor Gerhold Lemke was installed. For 15 years, he jointly served the Spearfish congregation at Hope and the Sturgis congregation at Trinity. He also initiated exploratory services in Gillette, WY. In January 1978, the ladies of Hope also formed a Ladies Aid and adopted a constitution. By the end of that year, Hope had a baptismal membership of 87 souls! Two years later, in June 1980, the council approved a new constitution.  

In January 1990, Pastor Pieter Reid arrived and was installed on February 7. He served both Hope in Spearfish and Trinity in Sturgis until January 1993, when he accepted a call to serve the Synod as a foreign missionary in Indonesia.

By December 2006, the congregation of Hope had decided that it needed its own local pastor to better help with outreach in the Spearfish community. From December 2006 to July 2007, Pastor David Maertz of Abiding Word in Rapid City served as a vacancy pastor. During that time, the council initiated the call process.

On July 15, 2007, seminary graduate Pastor Mark Schutz was installed as the first full-time pastor of Hope. In the fall of 2007, members of Hope attended a school of outreach in Rapid City along with members from other WELS congregations in the Black Hills area. After analyzing ministry needs and goals at Hope, members realized that expanding or finding a new location was a high priority. Hope formed a committee to search for land where a new facility could be built in the future.

The members of Hope enjoyed their time at the Jackson Blvd. location but realized that the congregation needed more space to grow.

Unexpectedly, an existing church building came up for sale. Formerly the home of Northern Hills Southern Baptist Church, the 1999 structure included a larger sanctuary, more classroom and fellowship space, two offices, a spacious parking lot, and empty lots on either side of the building. This building was located on the other end of town at 913 South 34th St., in the Green Acres neighborhood. Although the members of Hope valued the location on Jackson Blvd., the voters decided to purchase the building on 34th St. for $455,000. The next hurdle was the sale of the old church building. To the surprise of many, a buyer came forward quickly and purchased the building to donate to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church (ELCA) for a campus ministry site. The remainder of the purchase price of the new building was funded by a loan from the WELS Church Extension Fund.
On January 27, 2008, Hope held its last service at the Jackson Blvd. church building. Members had lunch together and packed up Hope’s belongings. The next day, the congregation closed both on the sale of the old facility and on the purchase of the new facility on 34th St.

Hope’s first service at the new building was held on February 3, 2008, and the building was dedicated with a special worship service on May 18, 2008. During the first few months in the new building, members worked hard cleaning and painting the interior of the facility. The baptismal pool in the front of the sanctuary was removed, and the area was remodeled into a sacristy. Pastor Schutz built a new baptismal font to go with the altar from the old church building and the pulpit that came with the new building.

Hope Lutheran Church has continually served more than just the Spearfish community. Members and visitors attend Hope from as far away as Rapid City to the east and Sundance and Hulett, Wyoming, to the west. Other members live in Lead, Deadwood, Whitewood, Newell, and Belle Fourche. In the fall of 2018, Hope started holding Wednesday evening services at the Branding Iron in Belle Fourche for the growing community to the north. 

Hope serves as a home away from home for WELS students attending Black Hills State University. The congregation regularly reaches out to the Spearfish community through summer Vacation Bible School, invitations to worship, Mornings with Mommy, Mornings with Jesus, and community events such as downtown Harvest Fest. Pastor Schutz also leads an annual summer Catechism Camp for the catechism students of the Dakota-Montana District, along with Pastor Nick Haasch of Trinity in Sturgis and other area pastors and teachers.

Recently, the decision was made to consider expanding the current facility to make room for additional fellowship, worship, and classroom space. Blueprints have been designed, planning stages have been developed, and the bidding process has begun. According to God’s will, Hope will continue to grow in its efforts to share our Savior Jesus with the people in Spearfish and the surrounding communities.
